Here at Clearfocus we recognise the effects of stress on people and how it can have an impact on performance, none more so than in the professional sports arena. Mental Health issues are on the increase for professional footballers, which can then lead into addictions including alcohol and gambling.
In 2015, Gouttebarge et al, conducted a European study into the prevalence of common mental health disorders in professional soccer players, with estimated symptoms of anxiety or depression in up to 43 % of the studied population of 540. Approximately 1/3 had sleep disturbance which has a significant knock on effect for those striving for maximal performance.
Due to this Clearfocus Managing Director James Holloway became involved in Tony Adams' Sporting Chance charity in 2015,
James explaines:
'As a psychotherapist I starting my career in the NHS and then moved in to private practice , for many years I was seeing clients from the sporting field. As part of this work I was able to gained a immense knowledge and experience working along side professional footballers, some of which still play professionally as well as some that have retired from their playing days. I realised that this was an area of support that was much needed and in 2015 I became involved with Sporting Chance working on a 1:1 and in group sessions.'
Courses Tailored to Your Needs
We have created a set of workshops to address these issues and to support sports professionals with Mental Health and well being. As well as supporting, these workshops are designed to help reduce mental health issues and help prevent the growth in this area, along with breaking the stigma of mental health issues in the sporting profession.
Due to having this privileged insight into the issues that can come when performing as well as after retirement this has assisted us to understand both aspects of the issues that can arise in this environment, with this in mind we are able to tailor our workshops and training in this area.
Sporting Chance Clinic is a charity providing education, one-to-one therapy and residential rehab for addictive disorders to the world of elite sport. James Holloway has worked on our Network of Counsellors and Psychotherapists since early 2015, covering the areas of Exeter and Torquay.
'James has mainly seen current and ex-professional footballers for us who present with a variety of issues from anxiety, low mood, addictive disorders, injury related issues and issues related to transition out of the game. James has been very professional in all his dealings with us and we have been extremely pleased with the service he has provided to the clients we have referred and particularly pleased with the treatment outcomes for our clients.'
